Scrap Material Specifications

Bare Bright Copper

Copper (Cu) 99.90 min


Physical Condition:
  1. Type of Scrap Acceptable

    1. Copper Wire

    2. Bus Bar

    3. Clips

    4. Chops
Physical Dimensions:

Material should be Shoe Box Briquetted, free-flowing Shovel Stock, #1 Premium Heavy Chops, or heavy gauge wire cropped to 18" lengths maximum.
  1. Condition of Scrap

    1. No copper will be accepted that contains silicon, bismuth, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, antimony or phosphorus.

    2. Material must be free from iron, solder, nickel, grease, tar, cadmium plating, lacquer or insulation ash.

    3. Wire that has been heated will not be accepted.

Number 1 Copper

This copper shall conform to the following requirements as to composition:
Copper (Cu) 99.85 min
Tin (Sn) .002 max
Lead (Pb) .005 max
Iron (Fe) .005 max
Nickel (Ni) .0152 max
Suplhur (S) .007 max
Arsenic (As) .003 max
Antimony (Sb) .002 max
Se & Te .0085 max
Silver (Ag) .0025 max


Physical Condition:
  1. Type of Scrap Acceptable

    1. Copper Wire – Briquette

    2. Copper Cable – Briquette

    3. Crucible Copper – Electrical contacts, bus bars, switch parts, field coils, electrotypes (clean)

    4. Chops

  2. Condition of Scrap

    1. No copper will be accepted that contains silicon, bismuth, antimony or phosphorus

    2. It must be free from iron, solder, nickel, grease, tar, cadmium plating, lacquer or insulation ash

    3. Wire that has been heated until it has become brittle will not be accepted
Physical Dimensions:

  1. Briquettes shall be tightly pressed, and may be of the following sizes:

    1. 5 x 7 x 18

    2. 8 x 8 x 18

  2. Crucible copper shall not be larger than 12" in length

  3. No wire less than No. 16 gauge shall be included in the briquettes

Number 2 Copper

This copper shall conform to the following requirements as to composition:
Copper (Cu) 96.0 min
Aluminum (Al .50 max
Tin (Sn) 1.0 max
Lead (Pb) 1.0 max
Iron (Fe) 1.0 max
Nickel (N) .50 max


Physical Condition:
  1. Type of Scrap Acceptable

    1. Copper Wire – Briquette

    2. Copper Cable – Briquette

    3. Crucible Copper – Electrical contacts, bus bars, switch parts, field coils, electrotypes (clean)

    4. Chops

  2. Condition of Scrap

    1. This metal shall consist of #2 unalloyed copper scrap. It should be free of excessive lead, tin, and solder. Material should be free of oil, moisture, iron, ash, and non-metallics. Excessively thin sheet, wire and hair wire are not acceptable. Material shall be free of chrome bearing welding nozzles.

  1. Briquettes shall be tightly pressed, and may be of the following sizes:

    2. 8 x 8 x 18

CDA ALLOY 360 Free Cutting Brass

This material should conform to the following chemical limits:
Copper (Cu) 60.0 / 63.0
Lead (Pb) 2.5 / 3.70
Iron (Fe) .35 max
Tin (Sn) .25 max
Nickel (Ni) .25 max
Aluminum (Al) .05 max
Silicon (Si) .05 max
Manganese (Mn) .05 max
Zinc (Zn) Balance

CDA ALLOY 260 (70-30)

This material should conform to the following chemical limits:
Copper (Cu) 68.5 / 71.5
Lead (Pb) .07 max
Iron (Fe) .05 max
Other elements .10 max
Zinc (Zn) Balance

70-30 Cartridge Brass must be certified "fired and popped", contain no non-brass primers, foreign material, bullets, iron, or lead. Brokered cartridge brass will not be accepted.

CDA ALLOY 932 (Hard Brass)

This material should conform to the following chemical limits:
Copper (Cu) 81.0 / 85.0
Lead (Pb) 6.0 / 8.0
Tin (Sn) 6.3 / 7.5
Silicon (Si) .005 max
Zinc (Zn) 1.0 / 4.0
Nickel (Ni) 1.0 max
Iron (Fe) .20 max
Antimony (Sb) .35 max

Physical Condition:
  1. This material should consist of hard brass pipe and solids free of plated, painted, iron, non-metallics, solder and pipes with cast brass connections. Material must be sound, clean, and free of sediment and moisture. Hard Brass shall be free of lined and unlined standard red car boxes, red brass, and semi-red brass.

CDA ALLOY 836 (Red Brass)

This material should conform to the following chemical limits:
Copper (Cu) 84.0 / 86.0
Lead (Pb) 4.0 / 6.0
Tin (Sn) 4.0 / 6.0
Aluminum (Al) .02 max
Silicon (Si) .01 max
Zinc (Zn) 4.0 / 6.0
Iron (Fe) .30 max

Physical Condition:
  1. This material should consist of red brass scrap, valves, machinery bearings, and free of plated and soldered materials or cast brass connections. Sprinkler heads are prohibited as they normally contain glass water vials and pose a safety risk if charged in our furnaces. Must be free of semi-red brass castings; railroad car boxes; cocks and faucets; closed water meters; aluminum, silicon, and manganese bronzes. Chrome plated material is 100% prohibited. Material must be sound, clean, and free of sediment, moisture, iron, non-metallics, and condenser tubes. The presence of silicon valve stems will subject the metal to immediate rejection.

CDA ALLOY 844 (Semi-Red Brass)

This material should conform to the following chemical limits:
Copper (Cu) 78.0 / 82.0
Lead (Pb) 6.0 / 8.0
Tin (Sn) 2.3 / 3.5
Silcon (Si) .005 max
Zinc (Zn) 7.0 / 10.0
Nickel (Ni) 1.0 max
Antimony (Sb) .25 max
Iron (Fe) .40 max

Physical Condition:
  1. This material should consist of semi red brass pipe or solids free of plated and soldered materials or pipes with cast brass connections. Material must be sound, clean, and free of moisture, iron, non-metallics, and sediment. The presence of silicon valve stems will subject the metal to immediate rejection.

EC Aluminum

1350 Alloy EC Aluminum (Al) 99.5 min

Physical Condition:
  1. Material should be briquetted or in the form of "chops" packaged in barrels, sacks, or boxes.

CDA Alloys, Lead, Solders, and Tin


National Bronze and Metals purchases scrap lead, solders, and tin on a case-by-case basis. Chemistry, packaging, and sizing are subject to negotiation. Antimony in any case not to exceed 7%. National Bronze is also a regular buyer of specific CDA Alloys.
